The Hobbit Reading Summary

Jolly Elves

They finally find the right location and start their way down. Eventually they come to a glade and jolly elves start singing a silly song. Elves seem to be much more silly creatures in this story than in the LOTR movies. We learn that dwarves don't like them.

Atomic Habits Reading Summary

3 layers of behavior change

There are 3 layers of behavior change:

  1. Outcomes - these are focused on results
  2. Process - these are about changing habits and systems
  3. Identity - these are about changing your beliefs and views

This reminds me of the approach in Buddhism where the Eightfold Path starts with Right View. Right View then informs Right Intentions and the morality triplet (Right Speech, Right Action, Right Livelihood).

In a way, Right View is a change in identity. At a deep level you stop seeing things as self and instead view reality as a momentary processes; culminating in an understanding of the 4 Noble Truths.
