May 16th 2026 - School Kills the Joy Of Writing Notes
When people are forced to do something they don't want to do they start associating the activity with negative emotions. In school kids are forced to write notes about subjects they're not totally interested in. This creates a deep aversion to note taking.
But writing notes is a wonderful practice that helps deepen understanding, increase memory recall, and helps build a body of work you can later use for your own writing.
Making time to take notes every day will lead to generating new ideas and connections. The key is to keep the notes small and connected. An exercise is to set a 10 minute timer every day, find a random note, refine it, make more connections, and create new notes off of it.
An advantage that digital notes have over physical notes is that they are easily searchable. One can use programs like grep or built in search functionality of one's text editor to quickly find them. This comes in very handy when you're trying to make good arguments with solid references.
