June 27th 2026 - Leetcode Style Interviews Don't Produce Good Hires
LeetCode style interviews are highly stressful and are not reflective at all of what you'll be doing day to day on the job. Almost a decade ago, when I was still working, I shifted away from these kinds of questions in the interviews I conducted and instead gave candidates a piece of code and asked them to refactor, clean, and make it more object-oriented.
The candidates we hired with this new process turned out to be of higher quality. They were able to more quickly jump in and start contributing in their new role and they expressed how the whole interview experience was much less stressful than traditional LeetCode questions.
Most interviewers are quite removed from the results of hiring candidates so it's hard for them to measure if their current interview styles are effective. I think we need more research done in this area to measure the results achieved by various interview methods.
